Set in the Faroese village landscape, this house has been passed down through generations of Sára’s family. Her roots are in Skála, and on this very spot on the hill. Today, the house belongs to Sára Mrdalo, who has opened its doors not as a restaurant, not as a performance, but as a real home.

Who is Sára

Sára is the heart behind á Berjarheygnum.

As a designer, Sára has an eye for atmosphere, detail, and the quiet beauty of everyday things. She understands how a room can feel, how objects can carry memory, and how small touches can make people feel at ease.

As a teacher, she knows how to share. She knows how to listen, explain, invite questions, and create a space where people feel comfortable. Her hospitality is not formal or distant. It is generous, curious, and human.

At á Berjarheygnum, these sides of her come together. By welcoming guests into her home, Sára shares everyday Faroese life. The kind you do not always find in guidebooks. Á Berjarheygnum is the name of this project.

Sára was born in Skála, and her family’s story has long been tied to this place. The house on the berry hill is more than an address to her, it is heritage, memory, and a living connection to the people who came before her. Some carried “á Berjarheygnum” as a family name, but they are no longer with us. Keeping the name alive is a way to honour them and to keep the story connected to the people who came before.

Rather than letting the house remain only a private family place, Sára has chosen to share it. That is what makes á Berjarheygnum special. It is not just about visiting a Faroese home. It is about being invited into a story that is still unfolding.
